About the Declaration:

The aim of this project is to form a broad coalition of organisations, clearly expressing their opposition to EU plans to systematically retain everybody's communications data.

In order to point out the far reaching effects data retention would have on society, any organisation representing citizens, professionals or businesses is asked to sign the Declaration. This applies particularly to privacy groups, consumer associations, organisations representing the telecommunications or internet industry or businesses in general, as well as professional organisations of doctors, lawyers, journalists etc.

The Declaration and signatures were presented to the European Parliament in Dec 2005.

As opposed to the campaign dataretentionisnosolution.com, the Declaration specifically aims at creating a common platform for civil liberties organisations, representatives of professionals and business associations. Therefore, both projects complement one another.

The initiator of this project, Patrick Breyer, is the author of several academic papers on data retention.
